Panelists discuss tax digitalisation on first day of CATA 42nd Conference in Abuja

47 Commonwealth countries in Abuja, Nigeria discuss digital taxation

Global businesses have gone online, and tax jurisdictions that fail to go online too will be losing out in the current international business politics.  This is the central idea that brings member-countries of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA) to Abuja, Nigeria.

A Nigerian and Chief Executive of Nigeria’s tax authority, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Muhammad Nami, and his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Mohammed Nizom Sairi got elected on November 12, 2021, as President and Chairman of CATA respectively. CATA tradition holds that the President hosts the next Annual Technical Conference of the Association. Nigeria was therefore adopted to host the 42nd Annual Technical Conference.

COVID-19 pandemic has unravelled a lot of mystery about online business transactions. Businesses hitherto averse to online transactions have joined staunchly, making the taxman to look online or lose a lot of tax revenue.

The conference started on Monday, November 28 and ends on Friday, December 1
