Nigeria: Another PDP ex-Gov., Yero, remanded in prison
Former Governor of Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria, Ramalan Yero, has been remanded in prison custody by a Federal High Court in Kaduna for his alleged role in the disbursement of N750 million campaign funds for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2015 general election.
The former Governor has been under investigation.
Also remanded in prison are Nuhu Wya, a former minister; Abubakar Gaya-Haruna, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna and Hamza Ishaq, a former Secretary to the Kaduna State Government.
Yero became the Governor of Kaduna State on the platform of PDP in December 2012 following the death of his boss, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa in a helicopter crash in Bayelsa State. He lost to Nasir El-Rufai of the All Progressive Congress (APC) 2015.
On Wednesday, Jolly Nyame, former Governor of Taraba State from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP platform was sentenced to 14 years in prison for offense he allegedly committed between 1999 and 2007 (about 19 years ago).
A Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) High Court gave him no option of fine.
The court blamed him for financial recklessness and brazen display of executive power without following due process. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged him to court for allegedly diverting N1.64 billion while he served as governor of Taraba between 1999 and 2007.
Yero and co were detained at the zonal office of the EFCC; however, after their arraignment on Thursday, the court ordered their remand in prison.
The former Governor, Yero, has been under investigation for his alleged role in the disbursement of N750 million campaign funds for the PDP during the 2015 general election.
