Buhari congratulates Wabba on election as ITUC President
Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Comrade Ayuba Philibus Wabba, the newly elected President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the largest trade union federation in the world.
Wabba who is the President of Nigeria’s labour union, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was elected on Wednesday in Copenhagen, Denmark to run the affairs of the Congress for the next four years.
In a statement today by Buhari’s media aide, Femi Adeshina, President Buhari said he joined members of the NLC and all Nigerian workers in celebrating the election, which further signals the great work the union had been doing in ensuring the welfare of workers.
“As the first African to head the ITUC, President Buhari believes the labour leader will bring his wealth of experience in persuasion and negotiation to the new position, assuring him of the Federal Government’s support. The President wishes the NLC President a successful tenure”, said the statement.
ITUC is the largest trade union federation in the world. It was formed November 1st, 2006 after the merger of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the World Confederation of Labour in Vienna, Austria.
ITUC represents 207 million workers across the globe with 331 labour centres in 163 countries.
Comrade Wabba is the first African to be elected President of ITUC. The election is for a term of 4 years.
