President Buhari Offers Amnesty to Boko Haram

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari on Friday offered stately pardon to Boko Haram members who would drop their arms.

Buhari said this at the State House, Abuja when he received 105 Dapchi schoolgirls and a boy, Bale, who were released on Wednesday by their Boko Haram captors.

However, Buhari failed to give a re-assuring step on the federal government to rescue the lone captive, Leah Sharibu, a Christian Dapchi girl who is being withheld by Boko Haram for failing to denounce Christianity and embrace Islam.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on the social media are demanding the release of Leah, the way other girls were released, with a hashtag #freeleah, saying that the ransom and negotiations Nigerian government entered in was both Christians and Muslims.

The Nigerian government has said it “will not relent” in its efforts to free the last remaining schoolgirl but concerned Nigerians want her release immediately.

Most of the girls were released on Wednesday but one Leah, a Christian who refused to convert to Islam, is still being held.

President’s aid, Lorretta Onochie tweeted:  Our Dapchi girls and Bale, the boy amongst them, have just arrived the State House in Abuja to meet with @MBuhari. Our thoughts and prayers are with Leah, the only girl yet to return. Pres. Buhari had declared that all will be done to reunite her with her family.

At least 25, 000 persons have died directly as a result of activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria from 2009 and property and livelihood have been razed down too. The activities of the Fulani herdsmen are upsetting locals and farmers, especially in the Northern part of the country since 2015. The cases of Benue State, Taraba State, Plateau State, Niger State among others are quite regrettable.
