Nigerians await court decision on presidential election today

Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has opened in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital for expected landmark decision on the March 2019 presidential election.
Two leading contenders to the office of the president, Atiku Abubakar of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) have been in the court over a petition by the PDP, challenging Buhari’s victory at the polls.
After months of gathering evidence, the court is set to make a decision that will shape Nigeria’s political landscape.
Opposition elements in Nigeria have faulted the dramatic prosecution and removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen and his immediate replacement by Justice Tanko Mohammed who has been adjudged as Buhari’s stooge.
But the Nigerian government said Onnoghen has been found guilty of corruption having failed to declare his assets properly.
Justice Muhammed will preside over the election petition when it gets to the supreme court.
It is expected that whatever happens, a party that loses will still proceed to a higher court.
Nigerians are however waiting with abated breath for the decision of the tribunal.
