Ekiti Election: Fayose is paying supporters N50, 000 for each night spent in cell

It is barely three days to the gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, South-West Nigeria and the atmosphere is already tensed. State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has promised to pay the sum of N50, 000 per a night in cell to any of his supporters who would be arrested and detained ‘illegally by Fayemi and his rampaging Policemen and the DSS on this election issue’.

Fayose, who is projecting his Deputy, Prof. Kayode Olusola to take over from him tweeted: Henceforth, anyone that is arrested illegally by Fayemi and his rampaging Policemen and DSS on this election issue will get N50k for each night spent in detention”.

Fayose’s offers comes as a result of alleged plan by the security forces to intimidate the voters and scare them from coming out to exercise their votes.

However, the Federal Government has debunked all allegations of using the police to intimidate voters and instead, assured voters of their protection.

The police have announced dispatch of 30, 000 officers to police the 2 million entire population in the one-day election. About 732,106 voters are expected to vote in the election.

Ekiti State has been ticked as one of the most volatile states in Nigeria in terms of election. Findings conducted by United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on electoral violence risk assessment in Nigeria last week said electoral violence is likely to occur in states of Kano, Kaduna, Ekiti, Adamawa, Plateau, Anambra, Lagos and Rivers States before the February 2019 general elections.

Major contenders to the number one seat in the state are the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC).

While, Fayose, is projecting Olusola, the ruling APC, which is in control at the federal level is rooting to return former Governor of the State, John Kayode Fayemi to the state’s seat of power.

The gender distribution shows that females are 371, 419 (51%) and males 360, 747 (49%).
