Mozambique rivals sign peace deal
Mozambique government and the former rebel group Renamo have signed a final peace deal, at a ceremony attended by regional heads of state.
The agreement, which follows months of negotiations, comes 27 years after the civil war ended.
They announced the agreement last week.
It allows former rebel fighters to be integrated into the military or into civilian life.
Some Renamo members who were close to the group’s former leader, the late Afonso Dhlakama, say they will not disarm as long as Ossufo Momade is the president of the party.
Correspondents say this breakaway faction could undermine the agreement, which is seen as a key step to help ensure October’s elections are peaceful. (BBC)
