Nigerian diplomat in trouble for attending US embassy relocation to Jerusalem
Government of Nigeria has queried the Nigerian Ambassador to Israel for reportedly attending the relocation of the United States’ embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday.
A Nigerian newspaper, Daily Trust reports that Presidency official on Tuesday night told State House correspondents that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, queried the ambassador.
The eventual relocation of the American embassy to Jerusalem has elicited mixed reactions across the globe. While it had infuriated Palestinians and their allies, the United States, Israel and the Christian community have praised the development.
The Gaza strip witnessed one of the worst protest on Monday, with many reported dead and many more injured following the relocation.
However, Nigerian Presidency said Nigeria was not present at the embassy relocation ceremony, contrary to AlJazeera report.
“The presidency official, who craved anonymity, said the Federal Government had asked AlJazeera to retract its report that Nigeria was represented at the event.
The official stated: “Based on that report, the minister queried the ambassador to explain why he attended the event”, said the paper.
