Saraki ‘hijacks’ corpers e-mail addresses for political campaigns, NYSC dissociates self
Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki and presidential aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been sending political messages to corps members across the country canvassing support for himself.
Following controversy generated by the mails, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a statement distancing self from such campaigns and indeed any political campaigns.
But the NYSC did clarify how corps members’ e-mail addresses in the NYSC data base escaped into the hands of politicians.
Corps members who receive such mails and who spoke to Discover Africa News said they did not give their e-mail addresses to any other platform apart from registering with the NYSC. They said their e-mail box has been ‘inundated’ with political messages from Saraki.
One of the mails reads: “The harsh conditions of extreme poverty faced by the people fuels the state of insecurity all over the country. Hunger, lack of education and lack of opportunities push many Nigerians into criminal activities including terrorism. We are failing abysmally to tackle the problems of today and to prepare for the future.” – Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (30 August, 2018).

The NYSC in a statement said “Corps Members should please note that the NYSC will neither send text messages canvassing for political parties and candidates nor release Corps data to such groups.
The Scheme is apolitical and remains unbiased to all contestants during election process and will continue to leverage on the tremendous achievements it has recorded in the democratic process of the country.
The NYSC partners all stakeholders in order to ensure free, fair and credible elections across the country.
All corps members are hereby reminded of the Director-General”s advice to remain neutral in their responsibility as INEC ad-hoc staff in the process of the 2019 General Elections.
Note: Above is for your information”
