Team South African women win Nigerians’ in AWCON games

South Africa’s female soccer team on Sunday beat Nigeria 1-0 in their Group B opener in the ongoing African Women’s Championship (AWCON) in Cape Coast on Sunday.

Both teams created many scoring chances until late in the game, when Thembi Kgatlana, scored the only goal of the match to beat the defending champions.

Although the Super Falcons were impressive, especially in the attacking prowess of Asisat Ashoala and Desire Oparanozie, but their efforts at goal could not yield any positive results until the late surprise from the South Africans 5 minutes from regulation time.

The victory of the South Africans will boost their confidence going into the second game, having openly declared their desire to qualify for the World Cup.

Nigeria on the other hand, have to work extra hard in their two matches to progress from the group, the African News Agency correspondent in Accra said.
