Threat to Life: Wike stays away from Leadership Awards today, as PDP warns FG

Today in Abuja, Governor of Rivers State, Nyesome Wike was billed to receive Governor of the Year 2017 award bestowed on him by Leadership Group, publishers of Leadership newspaper. But Wike did not turn-up to in person to receive the award.

Although no reason was officially adduced immediately for Wike’s absence, there are speculations that his absence may not be unconnected with alleged threat to his life.

The Rivers Governor sent some representatives who got the award on his behalf.

Following his outcry alleging threat of his life ‘in the crowd’, the Federal Government anwred him, saying his only saving grace is his immunity, otherwise, he would have been dragged in.

Meanwhile, Wike’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned against further threat to Wike, vowing to leave nothing to chance.

The party said the outburst by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government that it would have dragged in Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, but for his constitutional immunity, confirmed the fears that the government wants to silence the opposition.

In a statement on Thursday by PDP Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, it condemned in very strong terms, further threats against Governor Wike by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who it said arrogantly dismissed the governor’s allegation that there was a plot by the Federal Government to kill him in a crowd.

Wike  was named the Leadership Governor of the year 2017 alongside Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and his Bayelsa State counterpart, Henry Seriake Dickson.

The PDP statement read: “It is shocking that instead of calling for an investigation into the serious revelation, the Federal Government resorted to siege mentality to scare the governor, ostensibly to cover up the severity of the allegation

Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over plots to harass, intimidate, implicate and orchestrate untoward situations like assassinations, unexplained accidents, inexplicable “armed robbery” attacks, high profile abduction and sudden disappearances of opposition leaders and members.

The PDP, therefore, invites all Nigerians and the international community to note this threat against Governor Wike, as well as the action and inaction of the APC-led Federal Government, as we are not prepared to leave anything to chance”.
