Kenya’s Attorney-General Warns Against Swearing in Raila Odinga as President

Opposition members in Kenya have hinted  on plans to inaugurate opposition figure, Raila Odinga as the President of Kenya on December 12th, which is Kenya’s Independence Day.

Odinga rejected Uhuru Kenyatta as the country’s president despite winning at the pool and also in the Supreme Court. Odinga  has last month confirmed  that he would be inaugurated by a people’s assembly on Dec. 12.

Kenya’s Attorney General Githu Muigai said on Thursday that any attempt to hold a parallel swearing in of a president would amount to treason.

Mr Odinga, who pulled out of the October 26 repeat presidential poll, has maintained that he won the August 8 poll but was rigged out through manipulation of numbers in the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) servers.

“The criminal law of the Republic of Kenya stipulates that sort of process is high treason. It is high treason of the persons involved, and any other person facilitating that process,” he told a news conference.

At the same time, the AG warned the 11 counties that have passed people’s assembly motion, saying they committed illegalities.

Such devolved Houses, he said, may be surcharged for misusing taxpayers’ money.

After his efforts to stop the swearing in of President Uhuru Kenyatta failed, Kenya’s chief political opponent and scion of the country’s first Vice President, Raila Odinga, may be planning his inauguration come December 12th.

His supporters had pressed him to accept a parallel inauguration same day Kenyatta was being sworn in, but Odinga declined, preferring a later date.

The opposition leader had opposed Kenyatta’s election and subsequent inauguration, calling them shams.

Local reports say Odinga dispatched invitation cards on Friday for his December swearing-in, a move that has elicited mixed reactions.

“Some mocked the former Prime Minister saying the inauguration will be a comedy event where controversial African leaders will attend.

“A Comedy event is slated to take place in Kenya on 12th December, 2017….Notable attendees will be International Superstars: Besigye, Joseph Kony, Morgan Tsvangirai …Come one Come all,” Patrick Edwin Mathenge posted on Facebook. Others lauded Raila indicating that he was the father of democracy in Kenya and other leaders should emulate him.
