Coronavirus Lockdown: Abuja families hold church service indoors

While the campaigns to curtail the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria are being obeyed at some quarters in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, some people still flaunt the social distancing and self-isolation precautions of the World Health Organization.  

A number of prominent individuals in Nigeria including Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari tested positive of the virus. Governors of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir Elrufai have also tested positive.

On Sunday, a number of Christian families reported that they held church services in their sitting rooms. Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Saturday enforced lockdown on two Christian denominations within the city centre who went ahead to conduct church services and wedding programmes in violation of safe precautions.

A taskforce of the FCTA disrupted activities on the churches and sent worshippers and guests away,

On Sunday, some families reported on the social media that they conducted church services in their sitting rooms and even collected offerings and sent to church account. One of such post read: “Happy Sunday everyone. My family held a church service in our home this morning. It was awesome in the presence of God. We observed all the proceedings of a church service, collected our offerings and we have remitted offerings into the church bank account immediately. Praise the Lord”

The Nigerian government has said it is tracing the contact of more than 4000 persons who are suspected to have come in contact with COVID-19 patients.

As at Saturday, March 28, the number of confirmed cases in Nigeria stood at 97 with Lagos and Abuja having lion’s share of infected persons.
