COVID-19: Ebonyi Businessman, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, Donates N150M

To assist the government of Nigeria in curtailing the spread as well as cushioning the impact of Coronavirus in the country, Ebonyi State born businessman, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii has donated N150 million (One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira) in cash and kind to Federal, Lagos and Ebonyi State Governments.

The accomplished businessman also made a cash donation of N15 million (Fifteen Million Naira) to his kinsmen from Isu Okoma, living in Abuja, Lagos, Anambra and Enugu States who might be experiencing difficulties as a result of Coronavirus lockdown. The leadership of Isu Okoma Town Unions in these States have been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the money gets to the very needy ones amongst them.

Recently, as part of efforts to curtail the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus, the Federal Government of Nigeria and various State Governments declared a lockdown and ordered people to stay at home to avoid contracting the disease.

Rising to the occasion, Dr. Odii, who hails from Isuachara, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and resident in Lagos State, made the donations as part of his contribution towards curbing the spread of the virus in Nigeria. To this end, N20 million Naira was donated to the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health; N20 million Naira was donated to the Lagos State Government, while N10 million Naira was donated to the Ebonyi State Government.

Kind donations include 33,000 bags of rice and relief materials to 33,000 indigents, low income and no income earners in Lagos and Ebonyi States. The relief materials are to support stay at home pending when the government would lift ban on movement in the country.

Dr. Odii who is described as gentle and humane philanthropist made the donations through Ebele and Anyichuks Foundation, a charity organisation he established 13 years ago.

Nigeria is a country with a high density of people described as living in abject poverty. To many of such people staying at home is a luxury that they cannot afford as most of them live by their daily earnings.

Ebonyi State in South-East Nigeria is one of the States in Nigeria where Coronavirus case has not been reported. The Governor of the State, Engr. David Umahi has been taking proactive measures such as banning movement into the state and restricting activities within the state. All these are efforts aimed at nipping the crises in the bud to avoid the spread of the virus into the state.

An indigene of Isuachara, Dr. Odii’s home town, who is resident in Abuja, Mr. Barry Chukwu, a lawyer, who shared this information with Discover Africa News noted that Chief Odii is not new to philanthropic works. He stated that Chief Ifeanyi Chuks, through his foundation is building over 50 houses to be donated to various beneficiaries.

In the words of Mr. Barry: “Chief Odii is an uncommon philanthropist. It is in his character to assist the poor and the needy. He is building houses, I am talking about standard houses for various categories of persons in his native community. He sponsors sports competitions yearly with the aim of discovering talents and to lift the spirit of his people and to also engender peace and unity among his people. Many indigent students are on his payroll. He has established a number of businessmen in his community. I am not surprised that he is doing this now. It is no longer news that people are suffering as a result of Coronavirus in Nigeria. But we thank God that we have people like Chief Odii who is putting smiles in the faces of his people”, he said.

Mr. Pasona Stanley, a beneficiary of his large heartedness, in his Facebook post, corroborating the story stated thus: “Chief Dr. Chukwuma Odii has earlier supported Isu residents in Lagos with the total sum of N10 Million (Ten Million Naira). He is extending his supportive hands to his people residing in Abuja, Anambra State and Enugu states, with additional N5 Million Naira, bringing the total Sum to N15 Million.

“It’s quite worrisome that the global pandemic has caused sudden hardship as many households struggle to pay bills, feed families and take care of overall essential needs.

It’s indeed a moment of sober reflection and a time to be charitable to mankind, a time to show love to one another, a time to embrace one another with Sincere love, a time to show oneness and togetherness.

“Chief Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii is so passionate about his people from birth. He embraces his calling to salvage his people firmly. Since the creation of the world, God has always raised Iroko trees under which sheds the people found solace. More than 2,000 years ago (BC), God raised Moses for the Israelites, and the people of Israelites were not consumed in the red Sea. Chief Dr. ‘Anyichuks’, as we fondly call him, is the Moses of his generation”, he said.

Coronavirus cases in Nigeria have risen to 276 as at Wednesday night, forcing the Federal Government to decongest prisons and roll-out stringent measures to enforce movement restrictions in parts of the Nigeria including the country’s political and business centres.
