Nigeria 2019: 6,430 politicians jostle for 460 federal elective jobs

 

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said revealed that 6, 430 politicians are vying for different elective offices at the federal level in Nigeria’s general election which is barely four months away.

Of the figure, 79 candidates are vying for the number one position in the country; 1,803 candidates for the 109 senatorial seats and 4,548 for the 350 federal constituencies.

President Muhammadu Buhari is the presidential flag-bearer for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) while former Vice President and business magnet, Atiku Abubarkar is the presidential candidate for the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

79 political parties submitted names of their presidential candidate while a total of 89 parties fielded for candidates for President, Senate and House of Representatives seats.

The chairman of the commission, Mahmood Yakubu, said this during a press briefing with journalist at the headquarters of the commission in Maitama, Abuja.

Yakubu promised to make available a breakdown of the different candidates and the parties they represent.
