One More Chibok Girl, Salomi Pagu, Rescued by Nigeria Military

Remember Chibok girls? That group of 276 school girls abducted in controversial circumstance On the night of 14–15 April 2014, from Chibok community in Borno State, Northern Nigeria.

One more girl, Salomi Pagu, has been rescued, the military said today.

Troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole deployed in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno, on Thursday identified the rescued girl as Salomi Pagu, published as No.68 among the missing Chibok schoolgirls, according to Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesman of the Operation Lafiya Dole. “Currently, the girl who was intercepted in the company of another young girl, Jamila Adams, 14, with a child are in the safe custody of troops and receiving medical attention,” Nwachukwu said. So far, two batches of 21 and 82 girls have been freed as a result of the Federal Government’s negotiations with the Boko Haram terrorist group. “Three additional girls were rescued by the gallant efforts of our armed forces, bringing the total number of freed Chibok girls so far to 106.”

Responsibility for the kidnappings was claimed by Boko Haram, an extremist, Islamic, terrorist organization based in northeastern Nigeria. 57 of the schoolgirls managed to escape over the next few months and some have described their capture in appearances at international human rights conferences.

In May, 2017, some two weeks before the 2nd year anniversary of President Buhari, he released 82 Chibok girls at the state house Abuja. The girls were released after a prisoner swap with Boko Haram members.

Buhari called the release of the girls his 2nd anniversary gift. I cannot express in a few words how happy I am to welcome our dear girls back to freedom.

“Let me reassure Nigerians, especially relatives and friends of the remaining girls that the Federal Government will spare no effort to see that they and all other Nigerians who have been abducted safely regain their freedom”, he said.
