Buhari’s Home State Allocates 5, 300 hectares for Cattle Colony

Katsina State, North West Nigeria, has allocated 5, 300 hectares of land for the establishment of a cattle colony. Cattle Colony is an idea of the Federal Government of Nigeria to build a reserved area for Fulani herdsmen for cattle rearing.

Katsina State is the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is a Fulani man and a cattle farmer.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Dr Abba Abdullahi, the Special Adviser to Gov. Aminu Masari, made the disclosure to newsmen in Katsina. Abdullahi said the land allocation was part of the government’s proactive measures to prevent clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

He said that the cattle colony would be established in Gurbin-Baure, Jibiya Local Government Area of the state.

“Katsina is among the first states to give the Federal Government land for that project. We gave 5,300 hectares of land, and is in one place, Gurbin-Baure, Jibiya,” he said.

The special adviser urged farmers and herdsmen in the state to always resolve their grievances amicably through dialogue.

An analysis reports that about 370,000 hectares of Nigeria’s land’ll be given to herdsmen for Cattle Colonies.

The issue of allocating lands for Cattle Colonies has been smudged with controversy. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said Rivers State did not have land for cattle colonies, adding that his government would not be drawn into any argument on the establishment of cattle colonies in the state.

“We will not allow our state to be controlled by external forces; we will not be drawn into debates on cattle colonies. We don’t have land for any cattle colony in Rivers State.”

Also, Senator Danjuma Laah, who represents Southern Kaduna in the upper legislative chambers, said rather than ask for land for cattle colonies, the federal government should be interested in land for infrastructural developments such as Universities.
