Lazy Nigerian youth: Buhari should apologise to Northern youth, says Obiekwe

President of an Igbo socio-cultural group in Abuja, Nigeria, Igbo Gburu Gburu, Comrade Emma Obiekwe, has said President Muhammadu Buhari was referring to the Northern youth when he said that Nigerian youth are lazy and uneducated.

In a statement on Thursday, Obiekwe said Buhari only knows the Northern part of Nigeria very well and had not been privileged to interact with other parts of the country.

For calling the youth lazy, Obiekwe said, Buhari owes them an apology.

“It is unfortunate that President Buhari could tell international audience that Nigerian youth are lazy and uneducated. I know that he was referring to the Northern youth. But even at that, it is still unfair to describe them as lazy people. This goes to show that Buhari knows only about the Northern part of Nigeria. He has not been privileged to interact with other parts of Nigeria. He would have known that Nigerian youth are hardworking and industrious”, Obiekwe said.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday criticised the attitude of some Nigerian youth, saying they were “only hustling to get on the gravy train.”

“More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free,” Mr Buhari was quoted as saying by The Cable during a panel appearance with world leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London.

Mr. Obiekwe said Buhari owes an apology to the Northern youth, who in their laziness and illiteracy voted him to power when he was being criticised for having no school certificates.

“Buhari should apologise to Nigerians, to the Northern youth particular. They were the ones who voted for him and made him a president even when the world said he did not a certificate”, Obiekwe said.
